Thank you for your feedback! This consultation has closed.

We are upgrading South Yunderup’s Sandy Cove Park to provide an improved neighbourhood play space which is better integrated with the adjacent waterway, boardwalk and commercial precinct.

We're keen to know what you think about the draft plan, which includes:

  • New play equipment
  • BBQ with seating and shelters
  • Landscaping
  • Improved disability access to beach area
  • Improved walkability (some path works implemented as part of this project, some as part of future proposed works to the boardwalk and jetty area of Wharf Cove)

I think its a great idea to re do the park especially updating the kids play area. I think boats shouldn't be allowed to park on the beach, as most weekends there isn't any room left to use the beach for swimming or playing.

Are you keeping the trees that are there now? Why so many trees in that area? Seems overloaded. Very little playground for kids. I’m not sure that the boat area/water play area is sufficiently developed for those two distinct activities and to keep kids safe.

Mostly the playground and equipment looks satisfactory. However there is no allowance for a cordoned off area for younger children to swim as well as an area for kayaks and boats to tie up and launch. As it stands now, the beach area is too small to cater for these needs. There are areas of rocks, corrugated fencing (that was a temporary fix many years ago) and vegetation rendering a large section unusable. The beach area should be extended to correct this. Sedge planting should be behind the boardwalk not in front to assist cleaning the pollutants entering the canal. The existing slope of the picnic area makes it difficult for use. A remedy would be to have two tiers of limestone

I think that the proposed plan will be a significant improvement on the current landscaping/play are and will draw more people to the general area
Hopefully it will proceed in accordance with the timeline shown

Suggest to ensure beach area has room for canoe, kayak, paddle boat space or a low dock to tie up to. Current issue is that boats dock on the beach minimising swim/play area for other users, particularly children.
Play equipment looks of good quality but perhaps needs 2 sections appropriate for different age groups, could add a climbing wall for older kids.

Future- better parking for boats and remark the designated swim area as it’s dangerous with kids swimming around/in-between boats as they all squash in and leave no swim area
Accident waiting to happen

Hi. I live there ( wills way ) and it is common to see children chased off the beach so another boat can park on the sand. I see nothing in your plan to rectify this yet children love playing there. Most boaties think it their right to drive onto the sand as they are to lazy to tie there boats up. The beach should be for the people.

As long term residents of Sandy Cove we look forward to the beautification of this area and we make the following comments-
The play area and equipment look excellent and generally the project will be a great improvement to this area.
However, there is still no plan for a dedicated swim area for the many young children who frequent the beach with their families. They currently have to compete for space with numerous boats coming and going which is not an ideal situation in respect to the safety aspect.
A cordoned off area approximately 15 metres along the beach and the side of the walkway was in place some time ago and worked well.
The removal of the two small clumps of vegetation on the beach nearest the walkway will make the area more usable but it would also make sense to remove further vegetation and double the area for public use now and would be more in keeping with the proposed future upgrade as set out in the master plan.

I think any improvement to the area is a massive positive for South Yunderup.
I have a concern about boats mooring on the beach, when there are frequently children swimming in the water. I see there is a comment on the Landscape Plan about future wharf upgrades. Is there any visibility or timing on those?
I think that there needs to be something across the bay to stop boats beaching, and forcing them to tie up to the wharves. Particularly as there is a proposed play area going right to the water, which will attract more kids. I feel there could be a potential safety issue here.
Overall though, I am very supportive of the upgrade.

Pathway lighting from the Tavern/ dining precinct to the boat moorings would be welcome , currently no lighting , quite dangerous at night .

Need a dedicated swim area,
Have a look at Albany, they have a floating dock people swim inside boats moor on outside

How about some sort of water playground for kids with shade sails

Linda 4 months ago

I would like to see a number of deciduous trees that would give fuller shade in summer but let the sunshine through in winter.

You could make a really lovely BBQ area here. Something abit more rusti c to blend in with the vegetation thats already there. Too many bushes etc will just attract more mosquito's though being close to the water.

I see the proposed. Future works to the wharf is in the pipeline I just wonder how long this pipeline is because I have not been able to use the damaged jetty for several years.

I would like to see some kind of barrier around the edge of the park maybe going along the internal footpath around the play area like a knee high garden hedge or the native plants running along side the footpath. Not sure if that’s the best solution but I stress every time the smaller kids are running around that they might run straight onto the road...

Perhaps also adding some kind of play equipment for smaller kids?

Pram/wheelchair access to sandy cove shops/tavern from the boating area.. so far I can only see that u would have to go around via the road or go up steps? Unless I didn’t look at the plan properly...?

One BBQ may not be enough for peak periods.

We need to look at the access pathway of Delta Drive (opposite the Sports Club) as it is too high off the road to manage a pram, bike etc,

Where is the proposed plan please
